Aviation Photography Aficionados Converge on Miami

While some people are afraid of flying, many others hold all sorts of fondness for the sky. Whether you’re a pilot, aviation enthusiast, or just enjoy being on a flight — there’s something kind of magical about the whole experience. And then there is a group of people who combine another pastime with aviation: aviation photographers. If you love photography, airplanes, and taking photos of airplanes, there’s an upcoming convention you’ve got to, well, fly to.

The annual Florida Aviation Photography Convention is once again gathering in Miami, January 16ththrough the 18th in 2020. Spanning almost three decades of existence and featuring spectacular digital and film footage, participants and spectators alike will find tons of excitement. Attendees can expect this fun 2-day event to be packed full of camaraderie, photography, and airside tours.

The event will be held at Miami Air International, located at 5000 NW 36th St in Miami, Florida (a quick 10-minute drive from Miami International Airport). Whether it is your first time attending the event or a regular yearly participant, here is a quick guide to help you plan your visit to this amazing event.

With attendees and participants coming from all across the globe, finding a place to stay during this event can sometimes be challenging when searching for hotels near Miami Airport. The Hyatt Place Miami Airport-East is a good choice not only for its amenities but also for its location, which is only a 6-minute drive from the event. The hotel offers guests spacious rooms, free breakfast, free internet access, access to a fitness center, and a pool.

The aptly-named Aloft Miami Airport is another popular option for convention attendees. It features hip Miami styling in a budget price range. You can enjoy a pool, fitness center, and complimentary shuttle service to the airport.

The 2-day convention begins at 2:00 PM and concludes at 9:00 PM so you can take your time at any hotel you choose, eating and relaxing before or after the event.

As we all know, taking out a rental is the most flexible and seamless way to get around. However, depending on whether or not you will be enjoying Miami a few days before or after the convention, a few days in a rental can sometimes get super expensive. So here are a few alternate options to get around in.

The Miami-Dade Transit can get you from the airport to the convention in less than 40-minutes. It is the most cost-effective way to get to the event and around the Miami area with their affordable day passes. However, it will be a combination of transfers and walking when using this mode of transportation. You can also choose a rideshare service if you don’t mind paying a bit more to get there more directly.

Where To Eat

If hunger strikes in the middle of the event, McDonald’s and IHOP are only a few minutes’ walk away and are the closest to the convention. Otherwise, there are other food options available but are more than a 15-minute walk away. If you have a rental, then you will find numerous eateries in the area serving American, Caribbean, Chinese, Cuban, and Indian cuisines. You’ll want to set aside some time while you’re there because Miami has one of the country’s most vibrant food scenes.

Other Attractions

You are in Miami, so venture out and explore while you can. Casino Miami, International Links Melreese Country Club (an 18-hole golf course), and Grapeland Water Park are other attractions in the area that are closest to Miami International Airport. Further out, take your adventures from the sky to the water and visit Jet Boat Miami for a thrilling high-speed ride on a jet-boat or banana boat.

Perhaps you are looking for some downtime to enjoy nature and sculptures? Vizcaya Museum & Gardens (known previously as Villa Vizcaya) is a mansion turned museum located on Miami Avenue. This attraction features grottos, formal gardens, sculptures, and the mansion itself dates back to the early 1900s.

You can also just hit Miami’s famous beaches and enjoy the day and night away.
